Day 1
June 19th
Today we worked very hard at the end of the day our accomplishments were easily seen.  When we stopped
working for the day, we had managed to measure, layout, tape, cut all circles and begin the "finishing" work/cuts.

When we work on the Chartres pattern we can spend an entire day measuring and re-measuring our
measurements.  Its better to measure up to 12 times if need be, because you can only cut once, most mistakes in
concrete cannot be fixed.

So what is the difference in what we did in a day today??? There are many variables, the 1st being the size of the
concrete pad and the design.  A usual replica concrete Chartres pattern is Chartres pattern, full sized, is 42 feet ,
2 and 3/8th inches in diameter, the
Santa Rosa that we are doing for this job has a diameter of 23 feet, nearly half
of the size we are accustomed to.  The other difference is that the Santa Rosa does not have all of the intricate
artwork that the Chartres pattern does.  With the Chartres pattern cutting the circles (path lines)can take up to a
day and a half, today we did the Santa Rosa circles in 2 hours.  Tomorrow we will finish cutting the labyrs and the
line ends.  After power washing we will be ready to paint.  More about the painting process will come tomorrow on
the next blog page.

The pictures above show the progression of our work, Robert and Jesse had just started the measuring process,
the next photo shows what the labyrinth looks like when we finish measuring and the last photo shows a portion of
what the labyrinth looks like with the circles and the line ends cut.  The thumbnail does not show the detail very
well because the labyrinth was shaded, leaving very little contrast to see the cuts, clicking to a larger view of this
image will produce a better image of the line cut details.  We don't have very many pictures today because with a
crew of 3 people, there are no extra hands available to take pictures, this slows down the rhythm and the process;
we were also trying to get all cuts requiring tape finished today as there is a chance of rain this evening and early
tomorrow morning.  If the labyrinth gets wet while the tape is still on the pad, the tape will not stick and will float to
the top, often when this happens all measurements and labeling has to be redone.  I did not appear in any of the
pictures today because I spent my photo op time, creating the pictures of the day's progressions.
