Day 5
June 23
We arrived at St. Andrews this morning at 6 am to apply the 1st coat of sealant, Robert wanted to arrive before
the winds began.  Jesse mixed the sealant with lacquer thinner, Robert sealed and I was the "runner"; I was
responsible for keeping Robert's paint tray full and to move it around the labyrinth as he worked.  The roller that
we use is about 18 inches long, this roller wasn't too thick and didn't hold very much sealant, slowing down the
process a bit.

In the photograph above on the middle, if you look in the upper left hand corner you can see that the sealant
darkens the color of the concrete and the color polymer that we applied.  No, this photo is not something from a
sci-fi movie, through out the entire creation process safety procedures and equipment is used by all crew
members.  Safe, healthy, happy workers are workers who will give their all to complete the labyrinth.  We use
respirators  when we cut the concrete to keep the concrete dust out of our lungs and to keep us from breathing in
the fumes from the sealant which is a combination of sealer and lacquer thinner mixed together.  The fumes from
this are very strong and without the proper protection we could be come ill rather quickly.  The yellow rain boots
on our feet protect the labyrinth and our clothing from the sealant in case of drips and spillage while applying to
the concrete.  If the breeze is blowing it can go everywhere.  The breeze did create a challenge for us this
evening because it causes the lacquer thinner to evaporate quickly, as this happens it leaves a stringy, sticky
string that looks and acts a bit like a spider web.  We have to move a bit quicker to avoid this from happening,
while efficiently covering every square inch of the concrete pad.

The sealant has to completely dry before the 2nd coat can go on, so we got the day off to head to the beach,
explore, play, nap...whatever.  We will return at 6 pm this evening to add the 2nd and final coat of sealant to the
labyrinth, after this, we are finally finished.  The sealant needs to cure for a couple of days before anyone can
walk on it.  We had dinner this evening at the restaurant in Doolan's after we finished the 2nd coat of sealant.
Tomorrow we will have breakfast at Whose On 3rd restaurant and Grill and then we will head for our homes.

As I get additional pictures from the church once the meditation garden is complete, I will add them to this page.
